Hello fellow adventurers! I’m Jullia, and I’m thrilled to share my recent trekking experience in Sri Lanka, which included an awe-inspiring journey through the Knuckles Range and a visit to the stunning Duwili Ella Waterfall.
Before my arrival in Sri Lanka, I was eager to explore some of the country’s best trekking trails and camping spots. The trek to Duwili Ella Waterfall promised both breathtaking scenery and a chance to immerse myself in nature, and it did not disappoint. Along the way, you’ll encounter some remarkable sights, including the Infinity Pool and Dumbara Falls, which are just as captivating as the waterfall itself.
To embark on this adventure, follow this route:
Before you dive into the trek, make sure to stop by Khanna’s Place, conveniently located near the entrance to the Knuckles trekking trail. This spot is perfect for a quick refreshment and provides a great introduction to the area. The friendly atmosphere and local insights offered by Khanna’s Place make it a fantastic starting point for your adventure.
The trek begins with a fork in the path; take the right turn (look for signs indicating 3km to Eco Loft). After approximately 5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the mesmerizing Dumbara Ella Waterfall. This spot is perfect for camping with its isolated, clear waters and a large flat rock ideal for setting up a tent. The waterfall's soothing sound will serve as your natural alarm clock—an unforgettable experience! A word of caution: the current in the main pool can be strong. It’s safest to stay close to the rocks where you can feel the bottom beneath you. Swimming too far from the rocks has been known to be dangerous, so please exercise caution.
To reach the Infinity Pool, retrace your steps back to the path’s split and turn left. The trail is intuitive and guides you upwards to this next stunning destination.
My trek to the Duwili Ella Waterfall was a highlight of my travels in Sri Lanka. The combination of natural beauty, adventure, and the opportunity to connect with nature made it a truly memorable experience. If you’re an adventurer at heart, I highly recommend this trek for its incredible scenery and the chance to enjoy the serene beauty of Sri Lanka’s Knuckles Range.
Weather in the Knuckles Mountain Range is unpredictable, so bring a light sweater or scarf. Though the hikes are not strenuous, make sure you wear proper walking shoes with long socks and pants – these will come in handy when you inevitably run into a pesky leech or two. You may also want to bring a bottle of salt water to get rid of them if they latch onto you. Though some areas are shaded, you will still need sunscreen and/or a hat. Bring your swimsuit and towel if you plan on visiting the waterfall, a bag for any rubbish (leave no trace!) and a bottle of drinking water for the day.
Happy trekking, and I hope you find as much joy and inspiration on this trail as I did!
