Senanayake Samudra which was begun in 1952 . The total land irrigated under this project amounts to 52401 hectares. The main source for the Senanayake Samudra is the Gal Oya. It is at Nilgala in the Gal Oya National Park that the river falls into the reservoir. This place is known as "Makara". That name has its origin in the fact that there is a natural tunnel located at this place. This is the highest peak in the Monaragala District and it is a beautiful hill. The height is 1090 feet and can reach its peak in a rather difficult journey. The mountain top is a stretched stone. A far cry from the distance suggests that even if the stone is clinging to the top, it is possible that the guess is wrong. Visit the beautiful mountain range around the villages of Galabedda, Dunugolle Gama and Obbegoda.
The location offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the diverse wildlife of the dry zone. The flora and fauna of the dry zone forest provide insight into the way of life in the 1950s. One may encounter wild elephants, wild pigs, rabbits, deer, various types of insects, and venomous snakes during a single walk. However, it is essential to be accompanied by an experienced guide, as there are illegal animal traps and guns set by hunters in the area. The breathtaking sunset, intense afternoon heat, and humid dusk create an unforgettable experience.
